Comments on recap

I have some queries though. When a guy is selling a product, say a pen or blades of a certain company on a local train--- what exactly is he doing? Selling and marketing (both)or merely selling? Cud u pl chip in to make it clearer????? What comes to my mind is that as a seller he is not around for any after sales service or customer oriented relationship. So is it a mere selling concept? But, there r occasions when they also announce a particular company while selling blades, so is it a product intro + sales???

The other query-- does a brand necessarily involve a very sound product with which a co is identified?

Does ``creating new market'' (as part of the brainstorming on marketing)include extension geographical frontiers or reaching out with a new product or as in the case of shampoos or hair oil packaged in sachets created a new segment of market altogether? Or is it a combo of all????? Or would the last bit come under segmentation that is yet to be taught? Donno, so kind of an unanswered query.

bye & regds,

  1. Reply to SANBAN,

    1. Yes this is mere selling concept. Announcing a company name is just a strategy they follow to sell the product. These products they sell can be a copy of original product of the company name they announce.

    2. Good question. Creating new market can be unexplored geographic area or new application area for that product etc.

Yes shampoo , hair oil sachets are introduced to make the product available to a segments of a market where people can not afford or do not have the need of large pack size.
Normally we need to segment the entire market places by studying the purchase pattern of the buyers.

    These above are my view.

  2. Hi Sanjay,

Very thought provoking questions. Below is what i think

1.Selling is an inside-out perspective. Its starts from factory, focuses on the company's existing products, and calls for heavy selling and promotion to obtain profitable sales. Marketing takes an outside-in perspective It starts with a well defined market, focuses on customer needs, co-ordinates all the marketing activities affecting customers, and makes profits by creating customer satisfaction.
I agree with Nag's that the Train salesman is just selling his product for profitable sales, however the manufacturer has probably created a marketing strategy where he's branded the products and understood that individual train salesman are the best way to market and sell his product.

2.Most of the time it is the case that Brand involves sound products due to which a company is identified. Ex:
•How many people are aware that Ujala is created by Jyothi labrotories.
•Another case in point : Who are the manufacturers of India's top branded products such as Horlicks, Lux, Dettol, Clinic Plus Shampoo, Bisleri.
There are cases also where products are recognized due to the Companys Brandy equity. Ex: Pepsi ex: Aliva, Gatorade, Nimbooz etc.

3.Creating new Markets will be covered in our theory later. However there is good information to be found for the same at : http://www.themanager.org/marketing/segmentation.htm
